Terrible Tuesday

MEMOIR PROJECT ROUGH DRAFT

And so I learned through the teachings of The Way International, Eve bit the apple, Adam bit the apple, then God drove them from the Garden of Eden and handed Satan the deed to the Earth to do with what he saw fit. Only there was a catch, if the people of the Earth could keep their faith in God strong, God could from a hedge of protection around them and keep Satan’s stealing, killing, and destroying at bay. But if there was enough sin, enough unbelief, enough fear, God could no longer protect you, and stripped of your hedge of protection, you won’t last long…

Wichita Falls, Texas, a small city on the Texas/Okalahoma border, is not known for much. It is the big city in The Last Picture Show where the teenagers go when they need excitement and mischief and Wichita Falls is also home to Sheppard Air Force base, which is the reason my 3rd dad eventually lived there, but otherwise, you may never have heard of it. But Satan has. Satan knows Wichita Falls, Texas intimately. It is uncertain exactly what the people of Wichita Falls did, but sometime in the spring of 1979, the people of Wichita Falls, Texas fell out of fellowship with God either by excessive ungodly behavior, or excessive and intense fear of death and destruction by tornado, and this created a blip on Satan’s radar. Satan rubbed his devilish and oily hands together and laughed a devilish laugh as he saw a hole appear in God’s hedge of protection. Looking into a foggy cauldron (borrowed from the Wicked Witch of the West), he conjured an aerial view of northern Texas and sent pulsing waves of his hands over the foggy water and deployed four of his top devil spirits into a storm system growing in the sky. Satan laughed again as sent wave after wave of devilish energy to give power to his minions in the storm system until on Tuesday, April 10, 1979, the minions pulled four tornados from the clouds and touched down just outside of the city limits near the football stadium. The devil spirits spun and danced about demonically in their little tornados and one by one made their way to one another until they formed a terrifying, completely solid linear swirling funnel cloud of destruction. With their powers aligned together, the devil spirits stopped their mischievous dance and together, flew around and around in circles at wicked speeds, creating a juggernaut of destruction with a mile and a half footprint on what was once God’s beautiful Earth and began their assault on Wichita Falls by bumping into the football stadium on the outside of town (where the Pioneer Bowl was once played) and like a spinning top hitting a wall, bouncing them on a trajectory, not into the surrounding empty flatlands, but straight into the small metropolitan area.

The tornado sirens cried out with agony, their ominous droning sadness sent fear and panic into the people of the city. Looking outside to see what caused the alarms to go off, the residents of Wichita Falls, Texas saw a black monster blotting out the sky. Wichita Falls became saturated with fear and Satan and his minions soaked up the intoxicating and invigorating and empowering fear with the tornado and made Wichita Falls pay for its sins. Hell on Earth—Terrible Tuesday—began.
