The Looking Glass

And into the looking glass
    she peered close
    touching her pallid face
With each bagged eye
    and line of time
She felt most out of place

And in her eyes she could see
    another woman’s soul
A woman who forsook her love
and married as she was told
And all these years grown bitter
from the love lost long ago
Wondering what would have become of them
    but sadly she’ll never know
Now she knows no better
than to treat her daughter likewise
And the daughter feels now as she did
how can you love when you despise

And into the looking glass
    she peered close
    touching her pallid face
And in each bagged eye
    and line of time
She saw her mother’s saddened face
