Winter Solstice Reverie

My son on Santa’s lap.
My wife on mine.
Yuletide carols and jingalings streaming through my mind.
Cold smog nipping at my nose.
Gifts rolling around in the trunk of my car - I’ll wrap them last minute.
The smell of mesquite logs on the fire in the air on a No Burn day.
Lulled by long nights and the heater roaring into the morning light.
Tired but alive.
Overwhelmed but serene.
Colored lights glimmering through eyelashes.
My son’s excitement in my ears.
The longest night.
The shortest day.
The sun begins its rebirth.
Darkness retreats.
A cigar and a coffee.
I think of my life and it is good.
I think of my wife and she is beautiful.
I think of my family and they are missed.
I think of my friends and wonder how they are.
Tonight.
