The Determining Dogs of Downsizing

The howling and roaring relentlessly wailed on outside, banging on the windows and rattling the doors as the gales traveled across Lake Erie and beat on my house and mind while I tried to sleep but tossed restlessly from the wind and the dread of re-interviewing for my job the next morning as part of the downsizing process. Around four in the morning, I fell into a heavy sleep rich with dreams, most of which were nonsensical, until I found myself walking under a bright full moon over a deep ravine on a swaying footbridge made of rope and wooden slats. As I neared the center of the bridge, moonlight reflected off the shiny coat of an enormous black rottweiler stepping onto the bridge in front of me. And looking to my back, another enormous black rottweiler with moonlight reflecting off its glossy coat stepped onto the bridge behind me. The dogs closed in and they looked more monstrous with each step. I checked my escape routes: A dog closing in from each end of the bridge. Below, the roar of a river deep in the darkness. No escape. What do I do?

I paused for a moment, collected myself, forced the fear out of my system and said to myself, “This is my dream. I can do what I want!” And with that thought, I marched forward towards the approaching dog and passed through it as though I were a ghost, continuing on to the other side where I promptly awoke, imbued with the confidence that no matter what happened the next day at work, whether I lost my job or kept my job, I would pass through this tough moment in stride, fully capable of handling whatever may come. I then slept soundly, undisturbed by my fears or the roaring of the wind.
